On the nose I find the classic Sonoma Cabernet scents of red berries and blackberries with a hint of eucalyptus and cigar box. The palate provides mocha and dark chocolate notes, particularly in the finish, and enough tannin to make me crave a good steak.
Alcohol is 14.5%. 640 cases produced.
But it is a blend of different cabernet vineyards – 70% from the Mountain Terraces Vineyard (white ash soils) and 30% from select Sonoma Valley vineyards (red lava soils).
Each contributes different elements to the final mélange - the hillside fruit lending muscle and tannin, the red-rocked valley fruit lending a richness that contributes to this wine’s near-term drinkability.
A visual inspection of this wine indicates the winemaker eschewed fining and filtration, which I’m happy to see is an increasingly common technique (or should I say LACK of technique!) on today’s winemaking scene.
Despite its four years of age, its color is still robust, with my fingers just barely visible through the glass – both indications that the wine will hold up well in bottle for some time to come, should you find the will power. I recommend drinking this wine now through 2012.
Cheers!
This is classic Sonoma Valley cabernet. The wine is cab, the whole cab, and nothing but the cab!
