Petite Sirah produces dark, inky colored wines with good acidity and a firm texture and mouth feel. They are anything but a petite wine. Here, 'petite' refers to the tiny berries of this grape variety, which (because of their high skin-to-juice ratio) produce enviably long lived, tannic red wines, capable of aging two decades. The Dick Clark of the wine world – seemingly forever young. So this is a perfect wine to buy in anticipation of a newborn’s 21st birthday, the 20th wedding anniversary of some newlyweds, or simply one’s own desire for future pleasures. Before this vintage, JC Cellars produced many styles of the Frediani Petite Sirah. Some featured explosive fruit, in others the vineyard’s minerality came to the fore. The 2005 vintage balances both extremes, creating a truly beautiful wine. Cheers!
The Wine
Rich, blackish-purple in color, this wine has enticing aromatics of blackberry jam, smoky vanilla and cassis. The layered and textured palate shows off the incredibly rocky soils of its old Calistoga vineyard. A persistence of crushed rocks, sweet plums and blackberry fan out on the palate and carry through to a smoky crème brulée finish.
