The pomegranates for this wine are from orchards in the dry, Southern part of California's San Joaquin Valley. It was pressed lightly so as to avoid macerating the bitter rinds or seeds. The result is this brilliant ruby-colored wine that is beautiful to look at and a delight to sip. A sweet elegance is offset by its lively, acidic backbone that saves this wine from growing cloying.
Those who recall the once-popular college drink known as the Tequila Sunrise have enjoyed pomegranate jusice in the final ingredient - a syrup called grenadine. It's also used in the Roy Rogers and the Shirley Temple, but I have to go back much farther than college to remember those drinks.
This wine has a wide variety of used - straight-up and chilled as an aperitif or dessert wine; or add an ounce or so to a brut-style sparkling wine to create the ultimate Kir Royale.
Although this wine exhibits richness similar to a fine liqueur, this specialty dessert-style beverage is not fortified and contains only 11.6% alcohol. Fortified wines last longer than non-fortified wines, so please consume within several days of opening. And refrigerate after opening!
A most popular wine for those seeking new and interesting dessert pairings.
