This is an online exclusive - two bottles of Jeff Wilkes top wine from each of three vintages: 2001, 2002 and 2003!
Sadly, the joy these bottles provides will be experienced by only a lucky few - about 200 cases of this wine were produced in each of these vintages! Food wines, for sure.
Tasting Synopsis:
- 2001 - On the nose look for lovely bright cherry, black stone fruit, strawberry and floral aromas (rose). On the palate, black fruit flavors with hints of cola spice and smoke. The wine has good acidity and should be opened now. Go get a corkscrew.
- 2002 - The nose brings the same bright cherries found in the 2001, but with more strawberry than raspberry and more florality. This wine is rich and full in the mouth with hints of oak, anise and other exotic spices. The finish is elegant and complex with an essence of cherry and spice with well integrated tannins and refreshing acidity. A wonderful vintage.
- 2003 - This wine shows brighter fruit and floral notes than do the other two vintages. The palate shows a classic Pinot from this popular year. Look for a medium/heavy-bodied pinot with classic cherry, warm earth, satisfying acidity and well-balanced alcohol. The '03 is more effusive, more Pamela Anderson, the '02 more intellectual and intriguing, but equally sexy - perhaps Sophia Loren?
Bien Nacido Vineyard
This is the largest vineyard in all of Santa Barbara County, and arguably its most famous. The growers require each buyer of their fruit to produce a vineyard-designated label, which increases the value of the wine as well as of their own name.
Located in the cool Santa Maria Valley (on the East side of Hwy 101, in the Northern-most corner of Santa Barbara County), wines from Bien Nacido can be as light and delicate as those of Au Bon Climat (located within the Bien Nacido Vineyrd), Labyrinth or Lane Tanner, or as bold as those of Ambullneo or Tantara. Much depends on how the producer directs the growth of their selected blocks, as well as their harvest date. This wine leans more towards the former than the latter, hence its age-ability.
And while the words "Bien Nacido Vineyard" on a label won't guarantee that you enjoy the winemaker's style, at least you know he or she started out with fruit from a great vineyard.
Cheers!
