Tasting Synopsis
Frankly, when we know we're tasting a California Chardonnay priced under $12, we don't expect much. But we taste wines in a blind tasting format, and are always pleased when a wine we like is also a bargain. We quickly stopped being surprised when the unveiling of a well-liked wine reveals a Heron wine.
Over the last decade, winemaker Laely Heron has developed a reputation for making fine wines at amazing prices. Her wines offer definite proof that one can still enjoy a nice wine every night and have that arm and leg handy for when you want to buy a few of those special occasion, collectible wines.
Winemaker's Notes:
For 2004, we chose fruit from Russian River and Carneros for their cool climates and from Santa Maria to round out the crisp acidity. Our Chardonnay does not undergo malolactic fermentation to retain the freshness of the fruit. Aged about 6 months in French oak, some new, others with one or two years of experience.
