A food wine that is also sufficiently interesting to justify long moments of quiet consideration as you observe the stunning evolution of layers that seem to evolve with every sip, until the bottle is suddenly and depressingly empty. Its tannins and structure suggest a long cellar life, but I feel patience is over-rated, and this wine's immediate pleasures should be plundered.

Tasting Notes
Crafted in the Burgundian style, the wines from Windward Vineyards (exlusively pinots from estate fruit) have an identifiable florality in the nose (violet, lavendar and rose). Look for fruit aromas of ripe bing and sour cherry with wild strawberries as well as some sweet spices.
"Windward" was named for the cool Pacific Ocean winds that breeze through the Templeton Gap in the Santa Lucia Mountains that divide the Westside of Paso Robles from the Pacific Ocean. If you were to drive out to Hearst Castle in San Simeon and look East, you would see the gap of which we speak. It is sizable, even David Letterman's gap is small by comparison, funelling a vortex of ocean breezes directly into vineyards for several miles.
Owners/Winegrowers Marc Goldberg & Maggie D'Ambrosia were named "Winemakers of the Year in San Luis Obispo County" at the 2008 Central Coast Wine Classic. A well-deserved recognition.
