The Story
The word “Uvaggio” has as its root “Uva” which is Italian for “grape”. And “Uvaggio” is a blend of grapes in Italy just as Cuvee is a blend of grapes in France. So “L’Uvaggio di Giacomo” literally translates as “the blend of James”, or as I teasingly refer to it when tasting his wines with him, “Jim’s Blend”.
Winemaker Jim Moore fell in love with Italian wines while heading up Mondavi's Italian Winemaking venture. Working with the Frescobaldi family, Jim walked the vineyards of Tuscany and Northern Italy and become immersed in regional varieties and winemaking techniques.
He started producing his own label with the notorious 1997 vintage and continues to produce some of California’s finest versions of these wonderful varietals.
Winemaker’s Notes
“Each wine was fermented separately, then blended prior to barrel aging in 50% new, 50% neutral barrels. This wine is unfiltered but did see some fining and several iterations of gentle racking to remove sediment prior to bottling. This complex wine evolves pleasantly for 48 hours after opening - try some every few hours and you'll be amazed at its continual evolution.”
