CLoc 1/4 Turn Panel Fasteners / CLoc Sets |
The CLoc® Fastener has been the backbone of aerospace fastening systems (and now racing) since the late 1940s (originally developed by Camloc®). A proven and effective design, its major drawback was the requirement for many stud lengths to accommodate various panel thicknesses. In the CLoc® world, any stud length varies by .030, which means, the tolerance (or range of panel thickness variation is only .030). To most of us, that is very restrictive and the cost to inventory multiple length studs is prohibitive. In 1993, Skybolt developed the CLoc® Adjustable Receptacle. This design allowed one stud length to fasten a very wide range of panel thicknesses and eliminated many of the “techy” charts to calculate for a proper stud combination.
OK, that certainly opened the door for a wider market interested in ¼ Turn Fasteners. It still leaves the question of “What parts do I really need for a particular job”?
CLoc® For Dummies “CLoc Sets” cuts to the chase. For interior panels, use the CLoc® 2000 Series. For outside panels, use CLoc 4000 Series. If you can drill a hole and install a POP Rivet, you can easily install a Skybolt CLoc®. Just like a POP Rivet application, two panels need to overlap a certain amount. A CLoc® application requires overlap as well: 2000Series = ¾ of an inch. 4000 Series = 1-1/8 of an inch. (There are design variations that can reduce this requirement, but for this section, we want everything simple).
One last consideration: The CLoc 4000 Series uses a separate outside panel Grommet that is retained by a snap ring (SK-R4G). The CLoc 4000 Series Sets use a grommet with a maximum of .094 grip (the outer panel cannot be thicker than .094). Skybolt stocks several grommet variations for thinner or thicker panels (See Skybolt Catalog, page 57 or call 1-800-223-1963 and we will walk you through and recommend the correct grommet).
The CLoc 2000 Series requires a simple drill template, and if you are installing several sets, we suggest the SK-T26 retainer installation tool.
The CLoc 4000 Series requires 2 simple drill templates, an SK-T26 retainer installation tool to secure the grommet, and SK-4P3 pliers to install the studs through the grommet
