POLAR BROWN: Polar Brown is one of the most durable fountain pen inks that Noodler's makes - once dried upon cellulose paper it exhibits that sought after resistance to bleaches and the chemical tools of the forger as well as UV light resistance and pH neutrality. The color is a fiery brown with hints of Dante within the halo of the line - which explodes upon the page if one makes a sample line upon a wet paper towel to see this effect more clearly. The bottle can be left in the mailbox on cold mornings without fear of the contents freezing solid and bursting the glass. One of several unusual traits of this ink is to occasionally render coated glass (even a fingerprint inside a bottle) the appearance of a photographic negative until washed away with tap water. This illusion has not been found to serve any purpose yet - but if you find your bottle exhibiting this behavior and know of a purpose hopefully you can let other Noodler's users know? ;-) Noodler's has made other "fiery halo" eternal brown inks, yet this is the first to have such highlights with bleach resistance (others either turn darker in response to bleach exposure - or experience a radiance of colors as the halo expands beyond the confines of the line). Another odd trait is that the components of the ink include a brilliant red-orange "de-facto" prime (does not reduce to conventional prime colors and indeed behaves as a prime itself) which when combined with the other components forms a bi-gravity ink. In certain circumstances this fiery red-orange will show itself apart from the other components. It quickly hides itself back into the ink with movement and sometimes temperature changes, but now and then in testing the unusual would happen: a striped line (both horizontal and vertical bands, depending upon the vagaries of the nib/feed delivery and grade of paper). We have tried many times to produce this kind of ink reliably (for standard/readily available non-magnetic tipped fountain pens) in greater quantities than just one to three bottles....but have not yet reached that point. This ink does exhibit the behavior under the right circumstances, however....though not consistently. As with our quest for a white fountain pen ink - one day, if it can be done in ink....it will be done here at Noodler's (assuming the founder is still alive and kicking by that time!). Polar Brown, as with all Noodler's Polar inks - is lubricated. Why lubricated inks? Some customers like the effect upon denser paper grades - others like the feel of it when running a filling mechanism such as a piston or plunger...and still some others (usually artists) like how they penetrate through certain bleached paper grades and clay content and light coated paper grades. Provided people have a use for an ink trait or property - we will aim to please. As with other eternal inks, it is best NOT to mix it with non-pH neutral inks of any kind....and to avoid inks with any salt content (such as metallic salt based inks). Though durable once dried upon cellulose paper - it is fragile while aqueous (it resists the sun when dried on paper, yet NOT when aqueous in the bottle!) and is also quite vulnerable while aqueous to inks with extremes of pH, divergent dye families & high detergent levels. A pen should thus be rinsed first with a mild solution of household ammonia and cold to room temperature tap water before filling and as needed thereafter (NEVER hot! Hot water can fade ebonite and certain plastics. Also use tap water alone if no ammonia is available.). The tines of the nib should be open sufficiently for a ray of light to clearly pass through them - any tighter and flow will be restricted (this is not a conventional ink nor is it your typical modern ink filled with detergents...detergents would counteract the effects of lubrication and tend to remove lubricants from pen seals - thus they are not used).
