This is a conventional black ink from the 1950s, super smooth writing, shades well, and perfect for artists and calligraphers with fast flex pen work to do. It is water resistant on most paper grades - HOWEVER, unlike other grades of Noodler's Black (Standard Black, Polar Black, Heart of Darkness, and "X-Feather") Borealis is NOT a bulletproof black. What does that mean? This ink CAN be removed by several laundry detergents and carpet cleaners. It vanishes before bleaches. It is not considered fraud resistant (though still far safer than most ballpoint pens!). It is not resistant to heavy UV light exposure. It is simply a super smooth writing conventional black ink that still has the value added content of the 1950s which have been lost in many modern conventional inks. In the 1950s people EXPECTED their fountain pen ink to survive a trip to the mailbox during a rainy day! This ink offers those of you who might not want your grandkids to see everything you write - or who may have a desire for an older era's ink technology - yet do want the ink to survive a decent amount of time (though not perhaps as long as the paper exists, as bulletproof inks tend to do) as well as a few rain storms or water spills....another more durable option for an intense deep black line from Noodler's Inks. The Blackest of the Blacks!! Borealis Black is the new ink which we introduced at the 2008 Raleigh Show. It is a good flowing black ink that isn't waterproof like the regular Noodler's black ink. Some people have a fear of using an ink that is waterproof so Chuck requested Nathan make a rich black ink that is a very black and can easily be washed out with just plain water. NOTE: Borealis is pH neutral. <li>HEART OF DARKNESS: Heart of Darkness is a combination ink that absorbs as much of the color spectrum as could be engineered, with an average penetration rate when humidity levels are less than 60% and given the average paper grade(the less costly legal pads and basic copy and writing papers...rule of thumb: the greater the recycled content, the faster the dry time/penetration rate). All the previously mentioned black inks are “bulletproof", though standard black has been subject to the most extensive testing as it was our very first ink. <li> NAKITA: Nikita is a bright fire engine red ink spoofing former premier Nikita Kruschev. A truly collectable label with an included dropper-fill fountain pen. This unusual ink is the result of a long quest for a replica color to 1970s era mercurochrome antiseptic, which was famous for it’s distinctively bright orange/pink/red fire like tones. An artist testing the ink discovered that when used with a brush, the heavier applications of the ink would dry to develop into sepia shaded highlights within the brush strokes of the fire like color shades. No other carmine ink has been found to have this feature...and any unique ink deserves to be among our palette of inks based upon the hope somebody might gain pleasure through its use! <li> POLAR BLUE: Noodler’s Ink has formulated a new Polar Blue, Bulletproof (waterproof, bleachproof, UV light resistant), lubricating ink that will withstand the most extreme temperatures without freezing in your pen. It is a vibrant, intense Royal blue designed for use in all fountain pens and refillable rolling balls. Polar Blue, as with all Noodler’s ink is water-based, pH neutral and will easily wash off your pens. <li> BAYSTATE BLUE: At the end of World War II a colonial style blue ink was made in Boston, Massachusetts. Similar to a cobalt blue - though not an acid ink, it replicated blue ink from a much earlier era. There is a bottle in the Noodler's collection of vintage inks - and the color is extremely intense. "Baystate Blue" is Noodler's conventional (waterproof) version of the classic colonial era blue based upon how the original formulas behave upon the page and taking into account the later 1940s version color intensity....but avoiding the acidity of the earlier inks through the use of different/modern components. The label depicts two giant catfish spitting ink upon the golden dome of the Massachusetts state capitol - I leave the meaning of the art work to free interpretation (once upon a time there was a little tea party....). This ink is unique and has a different pH than other Noodler's Inks - being slightly more alkaline as indicated on the label. If you mix this ink - be careful to only mix small amounts to see how the ink behaves with other inks. That way, little will be wasted if the mix does not turn out to be as pleasing as might be hoped. This ink was not made with mixing in mind - in fact, sometime in the future a few more inks will be introduced that are compatible with this particular family of inks for mixing purposes. The penetration rate and dry time are classic - though should not require the use of blotting paper and pounce powders unless one requires instant dry times. It is hoped that when you place the pen to the page - this color jumps out before your eyes with that vibrancy of the rebellious inks mad King George so vehemently disliked! NOTE: Baystate Blue is waterproof when dry. <li> BLACK: We have found the black ink to be extremely water resistant when applied to paper and allowed to dry. However, unlike some permanent inks that will damage your pens if allowed to dry on the nib and feed, this ink can be removed with water (distilled water is recommended if ink is allowed to dry on the nib and feed). Ink is water resistant and was developed to write on most common types of paper without a lot of feathering. The manufacturer has indicated this ink is safe for use in most fountain pens but may cause staining on some materials. NOTE: The Black Ink listed here is the same Black Ink listed under the Waterproof Ink. <li> CAPE COD CRANBERRY: The reintroduction of a rare (and as of recently unavailable) mid-1940s family of inks that was once very popular in the New England area has been well received by enough pen users to warrant the expansion of these inks. Despite the highly unusual nature of this ink family (particularly when Baystate Blue is compared to far weaker nondurable modern inks) many Noodler's customers have requested that it be expanded beyond "Baystate Blue". The following two colors can be mixed with Baystate Blue and share some of its contrast and intensity - though do not share all of its properties (Cranberry is not waterproof, and Grape is only partially water resistant - both can be removed with bleach from paper). They have more variable pH levels - and when mixed the pH can and will migrate. They should not be mixed with with any other inks EXCEPT those with the "Baystate" label. They are "exclusive to themselves" in behavior as an ink family and can be destroyed if mixed with certain iron derived European inks. As with Baystate Blue - they have greater intensity which is often enhanced to the point of dramatic contrast on certain paper grades. So, if the ink appears "conventional" on one paper grade...try it upon a few different papers and you will soon see that it is not your average fountain pen ink. Also - if you are worried that an ink might stain a porous surface (as almost all ink - except washable - originally did exactly that before approx. 1970) you should not use the three "Baystate" colors.
