2007 Van der Kamp Pinot Meunier -- Tandem Winery Shopping Cart
$60.00
The van der Kamp family has been making wine from this highest vineyard on Sonoma Mountain for over four decades and Greg La Follette has been making wine from these grapes for a dozen years across four labels. The small block of Pinot Meunier at the base of the “Red Shoulder” block has always been a small but significant part of the Tandem van der Kamp Pinot noir bottling and added a spicy lift to our Peloton red wine blend. More recently it has also been included in the 2006 Auction Block Pinot bottling. Needless to say, we hold this tiny corner of Sonoma Mountain in very high regard and are pleased to bring you our now second varietal bottling of the van der Kamp family’s Pinot Meunier.
Tasting notes:
Fresh raspberries and Salmon berries lead off the nose into a zingy pepper spice followed by an almost meaty quality. Even in listing these attributes, this is all very delicate, laced finely with toffee and hints of hard Christmas fruit lollies. On aeration, the fruit aroma intensifies, indicating either decanting or medium-term binning. On the mouth, initial impression continues the finesse in its echoes of the meaty, succulent qualities up-front, followed by the fruit flavors that lift and enhance the more foresty aspects. This wine begs for food in its short-term aging outlook, especially the Christmas goose!
Technical Data:
- Vineyard: Originally planted in the 1960s as a compliment to the van der Kamp sparkling wine, this clone came from the Horn Vineyard in the more easterly reaches of Sonoma County. Now the last bastion of that long-gone vineyard, this old-vine planting of Pinot Meunier was scheduled to be pulled some time in 2008, a victim of Phylloxera. BUT WAIT! The fruit from 2008 was so larrapin’ good that there seems to be yet another year left in this old block! Martin and Ulysses van der Kamp are replanting the SE section of the property to this same clone, so please stay tuned for further bottlings in a few more years from this new corner of the vineyard.
- Harvest: sometime in 2007 (actually September 15th), as usual before we got tucked too far into picking the Pinot noir (actually before we harvested any of the Pinot noir from VDK).
- Fermentation: Primary was conducted with a inoculated Southern Burgundian isolate of cultured yeast after 2 weeks of whole-cluster carbonic maceration, and finished in late December. Secondary was completely native and finished uncharacteristically before primary was complete, in late October. The competition between the two fermentations gives this wine a lot of its yin/yang juxtaposition between feral & fruity. We call this “the judo of life”!
- Barrel aging: 11 months in all twice-used barrels (pretty much neutral oak), racked only before bottling.
