2007 Hawk’s Roost Ranch Pinot noir -- Tandem Winery Shopping Cart
$54.00
This ranch has been exquisitely tended by Chuck Jones and his family, selling us the fruit now for several years. It is always a “larger than life” Pinot, and we always needed it for the Auction Block Pinot noir blend to give that wine its weight and strength. But is has always and ever been exciting. Well, we finally got off the stick and bottled this wine separately, under its own vineyard designate, something which the wine, and Chuck, hugely deserve!
Tasting notes:
Bacon fat, meaty, smoky, pepper and savory spice, with Santa Rosa plum evolving on the nose as the wine receives air-time. Mouth has dark and bittersweet chocolate, with a terrific overarching mouthfeel that spreads its larger-than-life but pliable tannins from start to finish, making your mouth “buzz” with flavors!! A departure from your average California Pinot, this wine speaks to the Mariafeld clone and the clay-loam site in spades!
Technical Data:
- Vineyard: Huichita Clay Loam forms the basic soil structure of this terroir, which is smack-dab in the middle of the Russian River Valley. Row orientation is uncharacteristically East-West, but this allows Chuck to keep the sun-side of the vines always in good cover, with aggressive leaf-plucking on the shade side. The vineyard is entirely planted to the Swiss Clevner Mariafeld clone (UCD-23), which is known for its strength and bigness. Delivered!
- Harvest: This was a pretty trouble-free harvest, done in one pick at the end of September. The skins are thick on this clone, so we never have ANY trouble with Botrytis or any vine disease issues. Chuck likes a clean pick – again, delivered!
- Fermentation: Primary fermentation went smoothly and finished within a week of barreling down. Secondary fermentation also kicked off easily, meaning we could put this puppy to bed by Thanksgiving!
- Barrel aging: 11 months of aging in 40% new French oak, with the balance split between once- and twice-used barrels. New wood was from the tiny Burgundian cooper Billon and Francois Freres’ Hungarian concern, the Trust cooperage.
- Bottling technical information of 184 cases of this Russian River classic:
- pH: 3.69
- TA: 6.1 g/L
- 15.1% alcohol
- Residual sugar: 0.05% (almost impossibly dry)
- Appellation: Russian River Valley
