2007 Auction Block Pinot Noir -- Tandem Winery Shopping Cart
$60.00
Auction Block Pinot noir is a wine dedicated to the many charities Tandem has been supporting since we first started selling wine in late 2002. Comprised of the best barrels of our best vineyards, this wine is always meant to show how enduring yet generous and rich Pinot noir can be. This wine is built for the long haul. It will last the test of time as it is “auctioned off” to charitable collectors, yielding long-term results for both wine enthusiast and the organizations that help to fight diseases, support children and promote the arts and sciences of our world.
Tasting Notes:
Slightly darker than many of our other Pinots in current and past release. Red hue on the rim with a touch of lavender; pretty! Competitive cacophony of aromatics, with smoked game meats and forest floor vying with anise, star fruit, almost overripe guava and kiwi skins. Dark plum/dark fruits. Very complex nose that opens up with time in the glass, increasing the layers to even rose petal and rhubarb. Mouth is really fruit-forward, almost bursting with dark fruits and berries, as Martin van der Kamp might say, “Bursty” with flavor. The overall structure is not so much large as it is well-proportioned, well-balance, with just enough oak to frame the fruit. Late palate is soft, rich and pliable, with the earthiness returning to echo the long late finish. Makes you want to take another sip!
Technical Data:
- Vineyards: Manchester Ridge Vineyard made its second appearance in the blend, adding its voice to our West County grapes’ hills and sun. Hawk’s Roost Ranch’s strong Mariafeld clone and Kent Ritchie’s ancient “unknown clone” Pinot are, as always, doing a bit of heavy lifting on the structure, with the “terroir tour” trio of Sonoma Mountain (van der Kamp, Silver Pines and Sangiacomo in descending order of altitude) lending their unique voices to the harmony.
- Harvest: This was almost a perfect year. Long hang-time, cool harvest, many opportunities!
- Fermentation: done completely spontaneous for both primary and malolactic fermentation, we almost always choose the wild side of wine microbiology. Extended cold-soak during pre-fermentation helped to encourage the cool-climate yeast living in these vineyards and our winery. Most of the wine pressed before dryness which allows for the primary fermentation to finish in barrel, giving greater complexity, subtlety and integration to the oak aromas and flavors in the wine.
- Barrel Aging: After pressing, most of the wines went directly to barrel without settling or racking. Barrels were almost all from Burgundy. Age of cooperage was predominantly once-used, with the barrels coming from the Chardonnay program, taking just a bit of topspin off of the oak. Total time in barrel was 11 months with bottling after directly racking off of the fermentation lees.
- Bottling: 939 cases of this gravity-racked wine were bottled in late August 2008.
