In Sonoma County, 15% of the Chardonnay was lost to rot due to summer rains leading into fall rains during harvest. Superb discipline and training showed with the Sangiacomo harvest crews, and the ingenuity of the management and family members yielded a variety of sorting tables, rain covers, and transfer techniques that kept the quality of the fruit high. The coolest Roberts Road block, in the heart of the Petaluma Gap, proved to live up to its billing as challenging. With tears in his eyes while standing in the middle of the vineyard ravaged by the power of the storms, Greg called Michael Sangiacomo and together they agreed that this was not a year to harvest a Roberts Road Chardonnay.
But the Vella and Green Acres blocks were stunning. Greg, Mara and their kids spent many hours on the sorting table, following the hours of sorting in the vineyards done by the Sangiacomo crews. The result was just enough “noble rot” to give exceptional texture and length to a wine born in the face of possible calamity and tears. Here is what we, all as partners with the land, came up with:
Tasting notes:

This 2006 Sangiacomo Vineyard Chardonnay speaks first and foremost of the tumult and challenge seen in the vineyards. Profound feral, sauvage et animale aromas first greet the nose. With a bit of swirling to open the wine up, these gamey, smoky characters delivered by the native fermentation give way to exciting exotic tropical fruits: very ripe guava, paw-paw and star fruit frame more delicate notes of passionfruit and pineapple. The aromas are a veritable kaleidoscope of feral and fruit, swaying back and forth over an evening of tasting. The cacophony continues on the palate, with intensely layered and rich flavors of the same tropical fruits vying with apricot and yellow fruits for your attention. The late palate moves back to the more visceral side of the flavor spectrum, with late musky retronasal presentation and along, late, and smooth finish that goes on and on….
Technical Data:

• Vineyard: The star of this blend is the Vella portion, planted to Old Wente clone on a spit of gravel leading down the vine rows to clay loam for intensity. Green Acres clone, with larger berries & clusters, gave more of the yellow fruit notes and with the Botrytis, the silky texture. Both blocks are vertically shoot positioned, which this year made all of the difference, avoiding disaster!

• Fermentation:
Wild, baby, all wild! Think Batard Montrachet when you put this wine to your lips!

• Barrel aging:
Less new wood this year than others, due to the feral nature of the wine. Interestingly the 18% new French oak showed less feral character due to the natural carbon absorption from the wood. Francois Freres Allier forest, medium + toast and 100% sur lies with battonage for 23 weeks matched well with the wine, total time in barrel 10 months with no other fining.

• Bottling:
• Final bottling technical information of 658:
o pH/TA: 3.55, 6.8g/L
o 14.9% alcohol
o Residual sugar: 0.09%
o Appellation: Sonoma Coast

SKU: T706CHSG

Other products in the category Current Releases:

2007 Manchester Ridge Vineyard Pinot noir

2007 Sangiacomo Chardonnay -- NEW RELEASE!

2006 Porter-Bass Chardonnay -- NEW RELEASE!

2006 Van der Kamp Pinot Noir

2007 Hawk’s Roost Ranch Pinot noir

2006 Auction Block Pinot noir -- SILVER MEDAL - 2009 SF Int'l Wine Competition & 92 POINTS-Wine News

2006 Sangiacomo Pinot Noir -- GOLD MEDAL - 2009 SF Int'l Wine Competition & 93 POINTS-Wine News

2006 Silver Pines Pinot Noir -- 93 POINTS - Wine News (August Edition 2009)

2007 Silver Pines Pinot Noir -- NEW RELEASE!

2007 Auction Block Pinot Noir

2007 Van der Kamp Pinot Noir -- NEW RELEASE!

Tandem Winery Products

Tandem Winery
Tandem Winery ecommerce software powered by Nexternal
