This is the essence of Porter-Bass Vineyard. Farmed lovingly and biodynamically by Sue Porter and Dirck Bass, this crest line vineyard above the farwest Russian River town of Guerneville is home of some of California's most celebrated Chardonnay grapes. For those of you who may remember, this Chardonnay fruit in Greg La Follette's hands yielded the top-rated Chardonnay in the world from Wine & Spirits two years in a row (1997 and 1998 vintages) and led to receiving "Artisan Winery of the Year" also two years in a row. We are happy to report that we are right on track with those efforts, the intimate dialogue with the land, the growers and the grapes being as strong as ever. Particularly long lived this Chardonnay is aged an extra year in bottle to help bring out the complexity this vineyard is capable of achieving.
Tasting notes: Light straw-gold color with a hint of cool-climate green hue. The nose is one of fine tension between animale and sauvage characters and delicate floral nuances of honeysuckle and citrus blossom. This gentle play between two worlds continues on the palate, with fine late tones of sesame-honey bread, firm acidity and a late, distinct aftertaste again of citrus blossom. Though enjoyable on release, this wine should develop in complexity for the next several years and reward the patient oenophile with careful cellaring.
Technical Data:
• Vineyard: located at the crest of Mays Canyon, sitting between (and usually just above) the fog influences of the Pacific Ocean and the Russian River Valley, 3 clones planted early 1980's
• Harvest: 1 ton/acre picked in 3 lots from late Sept. to mid Oct. between 22.4 and 24.6º Brix
• Pressing: Old Wente clone basket pressed, Rued clone destemmed and skin contacted 8 hours before membrane pressing
• Fermentation: Old Wente conducted native primary, Rued inoculated with VL-1 to help draw out the floral tones that this clone can produce.
