This wonderful vineyard and family have been a part of Greg L’s life since the 1993 vintage. Luke has been cellarmaster and assistant winemaker for us. Now, with their growing family and their own Porter-Bass brand, it is time for Luke to take over the grapes for the family. This wine is our last Porter-Bass Chardonnay. It is with heartfelt thanks that we wish Luke and all of the family great success with their brand!
Tasting notes:
The nose is restrained right now, with a fine tension between the floral Rued clone and the feral Wente clone, giving the wine an undefinable but unmistakable unique quality. This uniqueness, more akin to a Montrachet than a California wine, continues on the palate with great structure and minerality. The floral notes echo on the long, late palate, leaving a memorable impression of intensity and seamlessness. This wine will age beautifully – the best is yet to come in the next decade!
Technical Data:
Vineyards: Farmed with Biodynamic practices on a saddle just south of the Russian River, Sue’s careful farming allows Chardonnay to ripen on their Northeast-facing slopes in years when even flatlanders have trouble ripening crop. The viticulture here is challenging and there is little room for error in this cool site.
Harvest: Two lots of separate clones harvested: Rued (Musque) at 22 Brix and then Wente at 23.2 Brix from late September into mid-October. Yield: ¾ ton per acre. Picking: Extremely difficult due to Botrytis that first developed in the Spring and then bloomed during harvest which required careful sorting.
Fermentation: The Rued clone was destemmed, crushed, must-held (skin contacted) and basket-pressed, and the juice fined before being inoculated with a pure strain of a special yeast that partners well with the floral notes of this clone. The Wente went wild, but due to the competition for nutrients from the Botrytis, we had to cross-inoculate with the lees from the Rued clone to get the wine to finish primary fermentation in December. Secondary fermentation completed in the late spring, un-inoculated and unobtrusive!
Barrel aging: 1/4 new French Oak. Latour and Seguin Moreau tight-grain barrels. Battonage (stirring) was discontinued in March and the wine was racked off the lees in April. Stainless-steel aged for 4 months before bottling, allowing us to bottle unfined and unfiltered.
Production: 221 cases
o pH: 3.51
o TA: 6.3 g/L
o 13.75% alcohol
o Appellation: Russian River Valley (but right on the edge close to the coast)
