Martin Mochizuki and Greg La Follette collaborated on Pinot noir clones in the early 1990s when Martin was heading up a large vineyard management company in the Carneros, and Marc Deprey earned his grizzled stripes in the Clone Wars of West Sonoma County as one of the real pioneers of our home area. Greg L did a study with UC Davis on the MRV fruit, comparing its phenolic componentry to scores of other Pinot noir vineyards. The result was a true outlier in the study: more polymerizable phenols and a bunch of other unpronounceable words than any other site studies. What all of this polysyllabic utterage means is that MRV is the REAL DEAL, folks – more “stuff” in each bottle of wine without the heavy-handed, oaky offensiveness that many of the New World wines have come to represent. We invite you to take the “MRV Challenge” and see if you don’t agree that the wines grown from this exciting and viticulturally risky site deliver all of the excitement that any wine has to offer, anywhere, any time.

Tasting notes:

when first bringing a glass of this wine to your nose, be prepared for a new paradigm of Chardonnay from California. The new Dijon 809 clone, must-held and basket pressed before fermentation, speaks to a feminine, floral side of Chardonnay. The Old Wente clone brings strength and weight to the palate, giving a balance and harmony, a richness with strength that very few white wines possess. The result is a cacophony of aromas, flavors and textures that provide a veritable kaleidoscope to the senses, first speaking of floral, then tropical fruit, then yellow stone fruit. Rich, layered, balanced.

Technical Data:

Vineyard: Vineyard: Located at 2800’ elevation on the first ridge in from the Mendocino coastline, this vineyard is one of the most daring projects planted in California. The miles of logging roads make this site even more remote, but the views are among the most spectacular of any vineyard we’ve seen. Visit MRV’s website at http://www.manchesterridge.com for more details on soils and weather.

Harvest 2006 was late and long after an early bud break. Eight months of slow growth before picking ensured that this vineyard was one of the “longest hang-time” sites on record. The season came to an abrupt close in the 3rd week of October with winter rains coming early and all grapes picked so that Botrytis would not set in more than 2%, adding just a touch of Burgundian richness!

Fermentation: the Dijon 809 clone was fermented with inoculated yeast that has the ability to partner with the floral aspects of this particular musque clone of Chardonnay. The Old Wente clone was fermented uninoculated or “wild”, with the secondary (ML) fermentation of both clones also going “native”. All ferments finished smoothly and without trouble, allowing for a long winter sleep except for the occasional “Battonage” or stirring to enrich the wines with the yeast lees.

Barrel aging: Stirring was done on a monthly basis through April, when the wines were allowed to rest. At that time, only metabisulfite was added and the wines were allowed to age on the lees until bottling in late August, directly off the lees and without any additional inputs or fining.

Final Bottling:Final bottling technical information of 150 cases retailing in CA a suggested $54/bottle:
o pH: 3.68 o TA: 6.02g/L
o 14.9% alcohol
o Residual sugar: 0.13 g/L (dry)
o Appellation: Mendocino Ridge

SKU: T706CHMR

Other products in the category Current Releases:

2007 Manchester Ridge Vineyard Pinot noir

2006 Sangiacomo Chardonnay

2007 Sangiacomo Chardonnay -- NEW RELEASE!

2006 Porter-Bass Chardonnay -- NEW RELEASE!

2006 Van der Kamp Pinot Noir

2007 Hawk’s Roost Ranch Pinot noir

2006 Auction Block Pinot noir -- SILVER MEDAL - 2009 SF Int'l Wine Competition & 92 POINTS-Wine News

2006 Sangiacomo Pinot Noir -- GOLD MEDAL - 2009 SF Int'l Wine Competition & 93 POINTS-Wine News

2006 Silver Pines Pinot Noir -- 93 POINTS - Wine News (August Edition 2009)

2007 Silver Pines Pinot Noir -- NEW RELEASE!

2007 Auction Block Pinot Noir

2007 Van der Kamp Pinot Noir -- NEW RELEASE!

Tandem Winery Products

Tandem Winery
Tandem Winery ecommerce software powered by Nexternal
