Martin has now turned vineyard management to son Ulysses, who does most of the pruning with his own hands. The Tibetan prayer flags that flutter through the vineyard (as well as in our winery as a gift from Martin to us) are fitting symbols of the rich and vibrant life that this family leads in respecting and tending to the land, to each other, and to their wine community. We are grateful to be a part of this van der Kamp winegrowing community, and are proud to bring to you this pure expression of unique terroir on which our friends raise their children, grandchildren, and wine.

Tasting Notes:

Bay leaf and savory spice aromas reflect the Sonoma Mountain forests surrounding the van der Kamp family vines. This is a different animal altogether, truly speaking of the special site and the sylvan floor that has been a spiritual place for the Native Americans since pre-Spanish times. Sage, California Lilac, brambly underbrush and pine needle duff highlight the forward raspberry and salmonberry fruit tones. The tannins, fruit and acid are well-balanced on the mouth, showing off great harmony and aging potential. The presentation to the palate continues evenly into the late palate, finishing with bold juiciness and a mouth-watering red fruit finish.

Technical Data:

Vineyard: Site of the oldest Pinot noir grapes in Sonoma County, a couple of years ago Martin and Ulysses replanted a portion of the vineyard to the newest Dijon clones. Though small, the site is quite diverse, with at least 3 distinct soil types planted to 7 clones of Pinot noir as well as Pinot Meunier.

Harvest: 2005 was a wet year, at least into summer. There was a great deal of grand growth to the vines and tannin ripeness was hard to achieve. We went late on the picking, into October, but the Brix really didn’t rise after an early Aug. hot spell. Once again, the patient were rewarded on the mountain.

Fermentation: We returned to 100% wild fermentation this year, and the primary and secondary efforts of the native one-celled critters did their jobs well, indicative of the trouble-free conditions of the year.

Barrel aging: We tend to favor the complimentary flavors of Francois Freres for this mountain site. 33% new French oak was judiciously used so as not to mask the feral and fruit tones which this site so effortlessly yields. Total time in barrel was 10 months.
Final bottling technical information of 444 cases of this mountain magic:

pH: 3.51

TA: 6.1 g/L

14.2% alcohol

Residual sugar: 0.06% (Bone dry!)

Appellation: Sonoma Mountain

SKU: 05PNVDK

Other products in the category Library Wines:

2004 Ritchie Vineyard Chardonnay

2004 Sangiacomo Pinot noir -- 94 POINTS - Pinot Report

2005 Sangiacomo Chardonnay

2004 Hellenthal Pinot noir -- Limited

2004 Peloton Red Wine -- Limited

2003 van der Kamp Pinot noir -- 91 POINTS - The Wine Enthusiast

2003 Keefer Ranch Pinot Noir, Green Valley -- ONE OF THE BEST PINOT NOIRS - Sunset Magazine

2004 Gabrielli Sangiovese

Tandem Winery Products

Tandem Winery
Tandem Winery ecommerce software powered by Nexternal
