A rich and complex Pinot that just cries out for an earthy cassoulet.

Tasting Notes:

Decant this wine if you can because the aromas tend to open up with a little air time. Classic Sonoma Mountain Van der Kamp smoke and roasted venison, but my wife likes to say “nice nose” of an Australian gum forest floor after a morning rain – sweet Eucalyptus and (in California) bay leaf scents. Dark fruits frame this forest with black cherry, Santa Rosa plum and a touch of molasses around the edges of the aromatic envelope. The flavors begin with ripe and exotic tropical fruits, leading into a mid-palate of smoky, intense and rich dark fruits including again black cherry. The late palate transitions with baked apple sweetness into a richness that comes from finely balanced acid/tannin levels and leads to a long, lingering dark fruit and tamarind fade.

Technical Data:

Vineyard: Site of the oldest Pinot noir grapes in Sonoma County, a couple of years ago Martin and Ulysses replanted a portion of the vineyard to the newest Dijon clones. Though small, the site is quite diverse, with at least 3 distinct soil types planted to 7 clones of Pinot noir as well as Pinot Meunier.

Harvest: 2004 came in fast and furious. This was the first year we picked the many clones and soil types separately, with many of the lots being separated only by a day or two. Here is the scorecard of picking: Aug 30th and Sept. 1st were Dijon 777; Sept. 2nd was Pinot Meunier; “Dehlinger” Swan clone on the 7th and 8th; the 9th for the hot new Dijon 828 and the venerable Old Vines block; the 15th, 20th and 27th finished up the Martini selection.

Fermentation: All wild primary and secondary fermentation was conducted across many of the lots. We combined some lots as they came in, delaying fermentation and creating a long, late and slow finish that lasted late into 2005. Some lots this year were finished with selected yeast to build the fruitiness further and to make sure that the wine was dry and stable.

Barrel Aging: We tend to favor the complimentary flavors of Francois Freres for this mountain site. 30% new French oak was judiciously used so as not to mask the feral and fruit tones which this site so effortlessly yields. Total time in barrel on the fermentation lees was 16 months.

Final bottling technical information of 688 cases of this mountain magic:

pH: 3.58

TA: 7.28 g/L

14.4% alcohol

Residual sugar: 0.23%

Appellation: Sonoma Mountain

SKU: 04PNVK

Other products in the category Current Releases:

2007 Manchester Ridge Vineyard Pinot noir

2006 Sangiacomo Chardonnay

2007 Sangiacomo Chardonnay -- NEW RELEASE!

2006 Porter-Bass Chardonnay -- NEW RELEASE!

2006 Van der Kamp Pinot Noir

2007 Hawk’s Roost Ranch Pinot noir

2006 Auction Block Pinot noir -- SILVER MEDAL - 2009 SF Int'l Wine Competition & 92 POINTS-Wine News

2006 Sangiacomo Pinot Noir -- GOLD MEDAL - 2009 SF Int'l Wine Competition & 93 POINTS-Wine News

2006 Silver Pines Pinot Noir -- 93 POINTS - Wine News (August Edition 2009)

2007 Silver Pines Pinot Noir -- NEW RELEASE!

2007 Auction Block Pinot Noir

2007 Van der Kamp Pinot Noir -- NEW RELEASE!

Tandem Winery Products

Tandem Winery
Tandem Winery ecommerce software powered by Nexternal
