2006 Lorenzo Chardonnay -- Tandem Winery Shopping Cart
$42.00
John Bazzano, owner of Lorenzo Vineyard on the Santa Rosa floodplains, has for years been growing some of the most profound Chardonnay in our ‘hood. Greg L first worked with his juice from the 1993 season, and was delighted when John called during the 2005 vintage. 2006 was the first year that Tandem was able to work with John through the entire growing season, which was a difficult year and required extra vigilance and care that John has always been able to provide.
Tasting notes:
A lot of vineyards talk the talk, but these old vines do the walking. Born in a difficult year, our 2006 Lorenzo shows the richness and texture that a brush with “The Noble Rot” can produce when care is exercised. The nose fills the glass with a spicy, perfumed presence that leads perfectly into the rich and spice-laden palate. Hints of the characteristic lime flavors are present, but this year more layered, peach and ripe rock melon lead the cacophony of flavors and aromas. The complexity continues to build through the late palate, with a lasting impression of balanced viscosity and seamless texture on the finish. Can you tell that we are really excited about this wine?
Technical Data:
- Vineyard: Located in the heart of the Russian River, John Bazzano’s vineyard is among the oldest of Chardonnay plantings in our region. Our section of the vineyard was re-trellised to a quadrilateral system, spreading out the bud load and creating small, open clusters with tiny berries. The moderately vigorous loamy clay soil seems to demand a greater bud load on each vine, giving balance to the vineyard and resulting fruit.
- Harvest: The 2006 vintage represented great challenges for Sonoma County Chardonnay growers. Rains into July created a great deal of Botrytis rot as the grapes started to ripen. These same rains came at a time when the clusters were starting to tighten up, and came again in the middle of October. 15% of the county’s Chardonnay rotted this year, but John’s vigilance and the La Follette kids’ sorting during the late October harvest kept quality high.
- Fermentation: Native both primary and secondary, the latter uncharacteristically finished well before alcoholic fermentation ceased, but everyone was in bed and asleep by Christmas!
- Barrel aging: 10 months on the lees with first weekly, then monthly stirring for 7 months in 40% new French oak brought out the round, balanced flavors of which this vineyard is capable. New cooperage was Meyreux, amplifying perfectly the spicy tones on the palate.
