You've heard of happy cows from California? Well, I think happy grapes grow in Alexander Valley. Early this summer, we featured an all-merlot focus in our wine appreciation class, "Grapes & Grains." We tasted a wide variety of price points and appellations, but Trentadue was the overall crowd favorite. A ripe blend of 83% merlot, 10% syrah, with a little cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, and malbec thrown in. After fermentation, most lots went through extended maceration (contact with the grape skins) for up to 22 days. This lush wine’s characteristics are typical to the region, with aromas of dark cherries, plums, licorice and earth. With further aeration the wine reveals complex, sweet layers of blackberry, cedar and tobacco. In the mouth, it's complex, full-bodied and finishes with long, supple tannin structure. ~ Rod Santos
