This was the best book I ever read on the UFO enigma. I read it years ago when it was first published in 1987(?), and I recently re-read the book again. Whitley has a great talent for conveying his thoughts and feelings about what happened to him, as well as providing information to ponder. I am very thankful he wrote this book because I have always felt more educated about UFOs just from reading this book, as well as some of his other books (Transformation and Breakthrough). Thanks Whitley. Keep up the good work. I also love Anne Strieber's diary on the web site.

This book was the first alien encounter book that I read. That was 21 years ago and it inspired my interest to find out more. It started me off on a fascinating journey that is still on-going. Its a good first book for those who have never read about an alien encounter before and for those who have, it still is a gripping read (I must have read the book several times and I still can't put it down when I do). Makes a great present for friends too!
Excellent book.

The One That Started It All!

Looking back, I can see that it was this book that really started me on my Gnostic Quest. I had hints of it before in parelle books and interests, like Greek myth and cryptozooalogical creatures and ancient cultures etc. But, it was when my mother gave me THIS BOOK that the scales on my eyes started to peel off.
If you do not know this book already you are missing out on something powerful. I found myself sucked in to the events as if I were by Whitley's side. I felt his fear, I cried at his wonder. It is so unbeleivable on the outside, but within it calls out to us who are meant to search for the truth. I just knew it was "real" somehow, the more I read the book the more I beleived.
It was either with this book or one of t he sequels that my imagination took me away. I felt the fear of the unkown in such a palpable way that I had simple audible hallucinations (no drugs/alchohol) and a great fear and longing that I was about to have my own encounter.
It was summer school, 1991 or 1992, Taos New Mexico. It must have been a sequel then. Transformation, perhaps? Anyway, I had just read a powerful chapter and was going to check on my drying laundry late at night. The laundry room was a small separate building with a flat roof and many windows. It was very well lit in there. Suddenly I had an odd feeling that I was not alone, and I swear I heard taps like rocks on the roof. I ran out to see what fellow students were teasing me. I listened and looked carefully but neither saw nor heard anyone. Then I heard three more "rocks" hit the roof nearest me in an even number of beats and nearly jumped out of my skin. I was SURE it had to be from the tree hangign above it, but still I walked very fast to anotehr building. This was a larger building that had many rooms but no windows on the back. There was a thin row of small windows up high under a peaked roof. I sat on a bench next to the back wall of this building and tried to slow down my heart and my imagination. I simultaneously hoped against and for an encounter. I worked on calming my fear down just as Whitley did. I imagined the woods in front of me if they decided to approach me in that direction.
Just as soon as I had calmed down a bit, lights fell down from above and behind me. The roof!! I was SURE that a craft (or whatever UFOS are) had landed on the roof behind me! For the longest time I was paralyzed with fear, waiting for their presence. But they never appeared. Soon, I looked up and behind me and saw that the light was coming from the windows.
So I cautiously ventured inside to find a female student at a piano there, the only person in the building. We talked for awhile and I was able to settle down so that I could go back to my bunk and go to sleep. That night I talked in my sleep and made a silly prediction about a card game we played later that day. The other guys made fun of me for talking in my sleep, but when they saw that they all got quiet. Soon the day went on, but they never mentioned it again or teased me for talking in my sleep. I also think while I was there I was adversely affected by the Taos Hum.
SO, thanks to Whitley for expanding my world. It all started with this book. This is one of the most important books for me.
