2023 Estate Syrah, Coombsville, Napa Valley
winemaking:
“When we planted the Shearer Vineyard, I chose Syrah selections that would blend to achieve a balanced wine with the full flavor potential of Syrah grown in Coombsville. I support this goal with gentle winemaking. We pick the grapes by hand when the skin tannins and flavors are fully developed. The grapes are desteemed without crushing to bring out more aroma and flavor. The must, consisting of grapes, skins, and juice, is cold soaked for 4 days before we begin fermentation. We ferment with a fruit forward Burgundian yeast in small vessels that are mixed 4 times per day by hand. The wine is then aged for 12 months in a combination of my favorite Burgundian barrels that impart the subtle spice characteristics and best complement the complex Syrah fruit”

roots:
The Shearer Estate Syrah Vineyard is owned by Elaine St. Clair’s father. It is located in Coombsville about 10 minutes from the Winery. It sits at an elevation of 600 ft. above sea level. Slow to establish because of the rock and shallow topsoil, the vineyard is now over 25 years old and is at its prime. Due to the steep hillside all the farming is meticulously done by hand. A western exposure, the cool bay-influenced climate, and rocky volcanic soil all favorably contribute to this wine’s structure and full flavor development.
