Matt Meyer grows intense fruit in a cool Anderson Valley vineyard. His wife Karen Meyer is their winemaker. Together they produce exquisite and crisp wines. These can cellar for a number of years, and mature into more complex flavors.

Their 2017 Mendocino County Syrah has a dry smoothness that one must experience. Not jammy, but open and dry style. 2017 had a bit of mid-summer heat, which brought out some great flavor. Picked at lower sugar, this 13.8% syrah is easy to enjoy as it opens up to oxygen. This 2017 Syrah is a wine that will evolve - be sure to shows the classic elements of smokey, earthy nose in a cold-weather style, ala Hermitage. Unmistakably Syrah, intense, dry, not harsh. Definitely let it breathe - it develops more complexity and flavor as it opens - a great sign of aging potential.

Try pairing with Goat and Peppercorn goat cheese from Spring Hill in Petaluma. These fatty, earthy accompaniments are rich and smooth the wines intensity and slightly tight edges. $35 library.
