2022 Florence Vineyard Zinfandel, Dry Creek Valley- 14.7%A new vineyard for us! The Florence Vineyard, mostly planted by Jack Florence Jr., son of legendary Dry Creek farmer Jack Florence Sr., sits just a bit further out in the valley than the winery. It is about 25 acres in its entirety, but only a small portion is Zinfandel, a mix between older and younger plantings, surrounded on three sides by Peña Creek, which flows directly into Dry Creek itself. Therefore, even though part of the vineyard is a similar soil type to our own, a large percentage is a combination of alluvial soil and river wash. The 2022 Florence Vineyard was picked an August 31st at the beginning of a significant heat wave. It is 100% Zinfandel, and like our other wines, it was fermented with the yeast that is native to that vineyard and spent about 14 months in 30% new American Oak barrels. Michael's peak drinking time: 2027-2030.Tasting Notes:
This wine has a classic Zinfandel nose, with hints of different red fruits and Rhubarb, maybe even in dessert form such as a cobbler or pie. The cherry character on the palate is a bit lighter than wines from our other vineyards, a bit like a Royal Anne. You will pick up notes of toasted oak and vanilla from the American oak barrels in this wine as well. This wine has a similar color to that of the Filice Larsen, is youthful and well balanced in its acidity and structure, and carries a juicy, lingering finish.
